Broadway's Best Movie

Broadway's Best Description: "Four films on two discs! The films are: "Royal Wedding", "Perils of Pauline", "Pajama Game", and "Happy Go Lovely."

"Royal Wedding:
The legendary Fred Astaire's classic dancing on the ceiling routine is a highlight of this delightfully enchanting MGM musical comedy. Astaire and Jane Powell star as a famous American brother and sister song and dance act who begin a London engagement at the time of Queen Elizabeth II's marriage. It's not long before they find romances and "engagements" of their own with co-stars Peter Lawford and Sarah Churchill. The tuneful Burton Lane-Alan Jay Lerner score includes the Academy Award nominated song "Too Late Now."

"Perils of Pauline:
This largely fabricated musical biopic of silent serial star Pearl White, The Perils Of Pauline (1947), gives us a nostalgic, often hilarious look at silent filmmaking. Betty Hutton is Pearl White, who goes from nobody to superstar to retiree in a decade (actually 97 minutes). William Demarest is perfect as the megaphone-toting director. And Paul Panzer recreates the villain he played in this film's inspiration, thei1914 serial The Perils of Pauline. Director George Marshall (Destry Rides Again, Ghost Breakers) coaxed a number of silent screen stars out of retirement for the many cameos that run throughout the picture. Marshall and one of the screenwriters, Frank Butler (Road To Bali), were veterans of the silents, which explains the film's feel for early Hollywood. Frank Loesser's song "I Wish I Didn't Love You So" was nominated for an Oscar. But the hit was Hutton's "Poppa Don't Preach To Me."

"Pajama Game:
Labor and management at the Sleeptite Pajama Factory aren't sleeping much lately: a proposed 7 1/2 cent hourly wage increase is why - and a strike may result. But negotiations here involve snappy stars, terrific tunes and dynamic dances as Doris Day, John Raitt, and a Broadway-seasoned cast play The Pajama Game. Songs by the Damn Yankees duo of Richard Adler and Jerry Ross and choreography by Bob Fosse generate lots of Steam Heat, all delightfully whipped together under the direction of two musical masters of stage and screen, George Abbott and Stanley Donen. Besides Steam Heat, catch Hey There, I'm Not at All in Love, Hernando's Hideaway, Once-a-Year and other all-time great numbers."Happy Go Lovely:
The Edinburgh Festival provides a colorful background for this lively musical comedy. When penniless dancer Janet Jones (Vera-Ellen) emerges from a limousine at the festival, she's mistaken for the girlfriend of the car's millionaire owner - when in fact, she'd only hitched a ride with the driver. Suddenly Broadway director John Frost (Cesar Romero) wants her in his next musical in order to get financing from this "millionaire boyfriend." Soon Janet is romanced by B.G. Bruno (David Niven), the limo's real millionaire owner. The musical numbers include "One-Two-Three," "Would You, Could You," and "London Town." Filmed in England, the "Happy Go Lovely" cast is filled with popular British stars such as Bobby Howes, Joyce Carey and Kay Kendall.
